Recycling Dumpsters:

General – results of discussions with Selectmen and Planning Board concerning permanent location of dumpsters, shelter, zoning setbacks (Tom and Chuck report).  A grant to help pay for the shelter could be applied for through Maine Community Foundation (mainecf.org).  Their Community Building Grant Program submission deadlines are January 15 and May 15 each year.  Does Dotty have any additional information about grants?

Cardboard & Paper dumpsters – cardboard tarp is becoming damaged at tie-down rings.  Metal clips are disappearing.  Are they being stolen?  Graffiti is a new problem.

Plastic & metal containers dumpster – trash found a second time (two times in two months?).  Does that constitute a ‘problem’?

Glass containers dumpster – Selectmen approved spending funds to build container.  Jim Cameron only specified that it needs to be portable.  Now, who’s going to do it?  Will one or two individuals design as well as build it, or should we design it tonight in Committee?

Fruit/vegetable/plant composting – We decided to not sell compost bins ourselves, but to educate residents about their use, and where they can purchase them, right?  Have we identified places to purchase?  Will a vendor ‘cut us a deal’?  How are we informing them?

Minority (Bulky, Construction & Demolition Debris, Metal, Hazardous) - nothing to discuss?

Remaining MSW – nothing to discuss?

4.  Bypassing ‘middleman’

Possible curbside pickup and take directly to PERC?  On hold for now.

5.  Communication:

Website – Additions related to composting?  Tom again discussed with Selectmen direct access to web site.

Mailing – no current mailing plans

Town TV – nothing to discuss

Radio Public Service announcements – nothing to discuss

Newspaper Public Service or town section notice – Peter?

Education (schools, etc.) – Peter “trash fair” update?

Minutes for April 1, 2009 meeting

1. Attendees: Tom Sproule, Dotty Young, Chuck Starr, Mike Gilmartin

2. Administrative:

Met at 5:30 at town office due to scheduling conflict with Trenton Planning Board.

Voted to accept minutes from March 4, 2009 meeting, 3 yes, 0 no, 1 abstentions

New and Old Business by category:

3.  Recyclables

Cardboard & Paper dumpsters – discussion on continuing tarping and overhead shelter.

Plastic & metal containers dumpster – dumpsters made it thru winter in decent condition and support from snow plowing, etc.

Glass containers dumpster – discussion on building a wooden box to replace the rented dumpster for the following reasons:

1)      Glass accumulates slowly. A 2’ x 4’ x 4’ box will probably fill once per month

2)      Discontinuing rental of the 2 cubic yard dumpster from Gott’s will save the town $17/month or ~$200/year.

3)      Since the box will be much smaller than the dumpster, it will be much easier to reach into.

Action item:  Mike Gilmartin agreed to build the box, possibly with help from other committee members (The Selectmen have agreed to spend $200-400 for this project).

Overhead Protection – discussion of future dumpster locations (Salt and Sand Way, Acadia Gateway Center, and current location) and possibility for an enclosed shelter.

Graffiti – discussed incident of graffiti on dumpsters.  No action needed, will look into any future problems.

4.  Communication:

Web access was discussed.

Input into 2008 Town Report (SWC letter and ADD letter) was approved.

5.  Other old or new business:

Composting bins and expense were discussed.

Maine Resource and Recovery Association meeting May 4-5 in Bar Harbor was discussed.  Selectmen are willing to pay for two members for our committee to go.  Peter has indicated that he will attend the second day but not the first.  Tom, Mike and Chuck all expressed some interest, but none committed to attending.

6.  The meeting was adjourned at 6:40PM.  The next meeting is Wednesday, May 6, 2009, 7PM in the town office.
