Solid Waste Committee for Trenton, Maine

Town of Trenton Solid Waste Committee

Meeting with Selectmen August 12, 2008

At the previous Solid Waste Committee (SWC) meeting (August 6), Tom Sproule was asked to speak to the Selectmen at their next meeting (August 12) concerning obtaining the dumpsters for recycling paper and cardboard.  The following points are the result of that meeting:

The Bangor Hydro work which has delayed ordering of the dumpsters is almost complete.  Janet Muise has called Gott’s to get preparatory information concerning the dumpsters.  Janet will call Gott’s again when we are definitely ready and it is anticipated that two 6 cubic yard properly labeled dumpsters will be delivered to our Town Office parking lot ‘by the end of next week’ (~August 22) and placed in the previously agreed upon location (east end of parking lot, near road).

Tom told the Selectmen of the need for covering tarps and rope to hold down the tarps, as is used in Tremont, and the Selectmen gave the go-ahead for someone on the Solid Waste Committee to purchase the necessary supplies.  Jim Cameron reminded Tom that the purchaser should save the receipts for reimbursement (present to Janet?).

As previously agreed, the tops to the dumpsters will normally be locked.  A slot in the side of each will be used for depositing paper or cardboard.  The driver will have a key for unlocking the lids when they need to be dumped.  Tom mentioned to the Selectmen the concern by some SWC members that we may want key access to the dumpsters for clean up purposes if someone deposits wrong materials.  Jim Cameron instructed Janet to see if we can get copies of the applicable keys to keep in the town office.

Signage:  Tom told the Selectmen that SWC members were in the process of considering signage which may be needed for the recycling dumpsters.  Jim Cameron responded that the dumpsters may already come adequately labeled.  We will see what they look like when they arrive, and then decide if additional signage is necessary.

Letter to town residents:  The first SWC mailing to town residents was primarily to address the dumpsters and the website.  The website is now active and the dumpsters should be on site by August 22.  Any time after that we should be ready to make our first mailing.  Perhaps the SWC should have as a goal the approval of the final draft of the first letter at its September 3 meeting (presuming the dumpsters are in place by then).  Tom mentioned to the Selectmen that Judy Sproule is preparing a school district consolidation update letter for town residents, and Janet Muise’s proposal that the two letters go out in the same mailing.  We will try to coordinate getting our final drafts to Janet at about the same time for a combined mailing.
