*MSW = municipal solid waste (that is, regular
trash).
**Cardboard, containers and paper are the recycled categories. Historically, the only
‘containers’ EMR accepted for recycling were #2 plastic, but
they have recently ‘experimented’ with recycling all plastics
except #7, combined with glass jars (such as from pickles) and metal cans
(such as from baked beans). As of
August 2008, a new contract was being negotiated between EMR and the Town
of Trenton. It is yet to be determined what recycling
options will be available under the new contract.
Only about 6% of our total waste is currently diverted to
recycling. It has been suggested
that, with a little effort, any community should be able to recycle at least 20% of its waste.

*MSW is sent by EMR to PERC in Orrington to be
incinerated. This incurs an
additional fee, such that our total cost for MSW is ~$116 per ton
(based on 2007-08 totals, expected to increase in the future).
**”Universal” waste is hazardous waste
requiring special disposal, such as computers, televisions, paint cans
and fluorescent bulbs.
Note that fruit and vegetable waste costs us nothing if
home composted but $116 per ton if
put in with the regular trash.
Also any cardboard, paper, plastics, glass and metal cans which
are placed in recycling instead of the regular trash saves us $116 per ton.
